The Royal Eggs are made by Yolonda Pears, a fifty-something artist from Wichita, Kansas. In her hands, simple eggshells have become delicately carved ornaments, intricate homes for figurines, lovely jewelry boxes, sturdy drinking vessels, and more.
Many people wonder how one gets started in such an unusual activity. As a child, Yolonda watched in wide-eyed fascination as her mother, Mabel Pears, hollowed out chicken eggs, carefully cut them with needles and razor blades, and decorated them with bits of sewing braid, sequins, and beads. Broken earrings were not thrown away in Mabels household. They were dismantled, their parts going to finish that one particular egg that needed just a little something, right there. Very conscious of her own grace (or lack thereof), Yolonda was careful to keep her hands to herself.
When she was in college, Yolonda began making decorated chicken eggs, very similar to her mothers. At one point, she was referred to as an eggerist. Uncertain as to whether that was an insult, she did a bit of research. Eventually (its a long story), she found that there was such a thing as egg art. Then she found some egg supply catalogs and the rest, as they say, is history.
Yolonda began selling her eggs at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival in the fall of 1994, and has been there every year since. She has made many friends there, both among the participants and the patrons, and has a lot of return customers. She has also been at the Oklahoma Renaissance Faire, held in the Castle at Muskogee, for several years, and has also exhibited at the Wichita River Festival Book and Art Fair, as well as several smaller Renaissance shows.
The main frustration in Yolondas life is having more ideas than time. She has made eggs into jewelry and jewelry boxes, clocks, oil lamps, functional shot glasses, wine glasses and goblets, lampshades, candle holders and more, but there are still more ideas than time to explore them all.
One of the things Yolonda enjoys most is working with customers to create custom eggs. If there is something particular you would like, if your sister collects zebras or orchids, if you want a goblet with a sunrise or a cat on it, contact us. She will be happy to create the perfect design for your needs.
